Dr. Rupert Craggs has built a flourishing team with internationally recognised expertise in wastewater treatment and water quality.

Dr. Craggs has led NIWA’s Aquatic Pollution group for the past ten years, managing 13 scientists, securing funding to support three Masters and six PhD students and hosting 58 student interns. His team conducts world-leading research into wastewater treatment and water quality, with expertise reaching into areas such as public health, algal physiology, biofuels, greenhouse gas emissions and aquaculture waste treatment.

To support research into innovative wastewater treatment technologies, Dr. Craggs strategically drove the construction of an experimental pond system and laboratory at Ruakura, as well as two full-scale pond systems. These facilities have provided a focus for much of the team’s pioneering work, fostering a swathe of well-recognised publications and supporting student projects.
