Ricci Wesselink is making a difference to student learning by flipping the education model.
A passionate health science educator, Ricci Wesserlink teaches anatomy and physiology at Wintec’s Centre for Health and Social Practice. Her research and practice focuses on changing delivery to enhance learning outcomes. Her students used to attend a two hour lecture, followed by a two hour practical lab and set homework. Now they spent two hours pre-learning on a cloud-based platform followed by a two hour lab and a one hour ‘lectorial’. Flipping and blending the model increased the overall pass rate by 13% and the short answer test pass rate by 21%. Mean marks were also higher. Ricci’s work has been well-received at New Zealand events and garnered a Best Poster award at The Federation of Asia and Oceania physiological society conference in Japan earlier this year.
