Waikato Regional Council Environmental Award – Finalist
Waikato Regional Council’s State of Environment 2022 Team, led by Thomas Wilding, has produced a vital reference for future management of the region’s air, land and water.
The State of Environment Report 2022 collects, analyses and interprets over two decades of environmental data, integrating information from over 25 peer-reviewed publications by Waikato Regional Council scientists and technical experts, as well as input from mana whenua.
It details the most important environmental issues facing the region and recommends appropriate responses. Waikato has New Zealand’s longest river, about a quarter of its best soils, most of its geothermal resources, the largest karst area, as well as internationally significant wetlands, and has experienced significant population growth and pastoral intensification. This report will help guide regional policy to safeguard the natural resources we use and rely on into the future.
The State of Environment 2022 Team, led by Thomas Wilding, is a 2023 finalist in the Waikato Regional Council Environmental Science Award.
