With her research into goat milk and its impact on brain processes, Dr Anica Klockars is traversing new ground in nutritional research.
When breastfeeding is not possible or practical, formula feeding is the alternative. Cow-milk products are the usual choice but rising popularity of goat milk options revealed a research gap. Dr Klockars examined the effect of goat milk on brain pathways involved in hunger, sensations of ‘fullness’ and eating for reward. Her findings showed whey-enhanced goat milk formula to be highly tasty, without triggering over-consumption. Dr Klockars is now extending her research to explore goat milk as a functional food to help with specific neuropsychiatric conditions.
