Dr Matthew Luckie’s work is supporting global efforts to make the internet safer and more transparent.
As the internet grows organically and at pace, it is becoming the ‘wild frontier’ of the digital age. Dr Matthew Luckie is one of its prominent explorers, going beyond text-book accounts to observe and document its real-world operation at a global scale; its congestion points, structural weaknesses and vulnerabilities to cyberattack. Trusty sidekick for much of his research is Scamper, an innovative tool which he created to measure web ‘topography’ and characteristics. Dr Luckie’s research has earned him numerous citations and several ‘Best Paper’ awards. His 2017 paper on the impact of router outages was the first featured in the industry’s flagship conference from a New Zealand university in 20 years. His knowledge and investigative tools are making a huge contribution to international research, helping to make the web more robust and safer for its users.
